Many of the business associates that I have clearly see the benefit of weblogs for themselves and their business but have a tough time getting started and into the habit of posting on a regular basis. Below is a post I copied from Roland Tanglao's Streamline blog. It's great simple advice on how to get going.
Here's a quick answer. Feel free to break these 'rules' once you have a couple of dozen posts under under your belt:
- Write at least one post a day Monday through Friday. Posts can be long or as short as a sentence or two - I recommend starting off short. Do it regularly so people will people will know they can come back and read new stuff.
- Make sure you link to anybody you quote or relevant supporting material. Otherwise your blog is a disconnected island. People don't read 'island' blogs unless the material is stunningly original.
- Try to ensure that the title of your blog posts and the title of your blog are meaningful to Google (i.e title your posts 'some unique phrase - 'some aspect of this unique phrase').
e.g. "Vancouver Cross Country Skiing - Whistler's XC trails suck" is a good blog post title "Bad, flat XC trails" is not a good title for a blog post.
"Vancouver Cross Country Skiing - I conquered the big hill" is another good blog post title.
Of course this only works if "some unique phrase" has not been taken up by big websites. A lot of real estate phrases like "Granville Street Vancouver" have been taken up by the big real estate sites for example. Feel free to disregard this rule if you don't care about Google ranking! Remember though, that a high Google ranking for a unique phrase relevant to your passion is money directly or indirectly!
- Blog about your passions! Self explanatory.
